I spent the day at the Ninemsn Digital Marketing Summit - possibly the first event I've been to this year where I wasn't a speaker. See my separate posts on Jeffrey Cole's presentation and notes from other presentations at the Summit. In the afternoon Dan Sheniak , Global Media Director at Wieden + Kennedy, talked about the future of the big idea in a world of fragmented media, liberally using examples from their recent work, notably for Nike and Old Spice.

Be excellent to each other (thoughts on Ubuntu!)

I'm not lost, I'm wondering

I had been reading up on Ubuntu (the operating system ) when I came across ubuntu!: An Inspiring Story About an African Tradition of Teamwork and Collaboration (the book ) at the library. It was obvious from the subtitle that this was not a book about the OS, but the title pulled me in to at least take a look. At first I thought it was a true story, perhaps an extended case study, since it was in the new non-fiction section.

IT Staff to End User Ratio

A CIO's Voice

'Is there a rule of thumb for the number of IT staff to the number of end users? No. No two companies are the same. If that were the case there would be a hard and fast rule we all would follow. So comparing the ratios of man to machine will not determine the correct ratio. IT staffing ratios might come into play in larger companies. Efficiencies of scale coupled with segregation of job responsibilities allow larger companies to trend those ratios to some pretty high numbers.

What caught my eye was how conference organizer Alex Miller ( @puredanger ) tied the ideas of one of my favorite books of recent years, Douglas Hofstadter’s I Am a Strange Loop , to The Loop here in St.
