The stories abound about pricing increases following Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware in late 2023. A VMware licensing cost increase of 150%. For many VMware customers, the licensing model and price changes were abrupt. The same is true of what were previously a la carte VMware products. An increase of 300%.

There has been a good deal of FUD spread since VMware has announced their NSX network hypervisor based on software from their $1 billion Nicira acquisition. VMware is a large corporation but, $1 billion is a lot of money to any company and a big bet on network virtualization. This places VMware and Cisco on a collision course.

We are looking at the enterprise that is highly virtualized, which looking at the market means VMware or Hyper-v with or KVM and others to a much lessor extent. So, the “typical” administrator will have strong Windows skills. I believe I’m of the same ilk of the typical traditional VMware enterprise sysadmin.
