Its up to IT leaders to ensure the changes their digital initiatives bring to business workflows are absorbed and acted upon by the users impacted by them. Too often, however, changemanagement is treated as an afterthought, observes Munir Hafez, senior vice president and CIO at consumer credit reporting agency TransUnion.
As data centers evolve from traditional compute and storage facilities into AI powerhouses, the demand for qualified professionals continues to grow exponentially and salaries are high. The rise of AI, in particular, is dramatically reshaping the technology industry, and data centers are at the epicenter of the changes.
Not just any humans, but those who understand how AI works, the dependencies between good data and useful AI outputs, and where human judgement […] It’s altering how we make decisions and interact with technology. But for all its power, it still needs humans (for now).
Key predictions include the rise of agentic AI, increased focus on data privacy, and the need for effective changemanagement to support innovation and employee engagement.
By Bryan Kirschner, Vice President, Strategy at DataStax Changemanagement across people, processes, and technologies is a critical part of succeeding with generative AI (genAI). Traditional apps cant display any agency beyond the data sources and queries hard-coded into them.
Over the past decade, CIOs have invested significantly in digital transformation initiatives in an effort to improve customer experiences, build data analytics capabilities, and deliver productivity enhancements with automation. This dip delays when the business can start realizing the value delivered.
However, trade along the Silk Road was not just a matter of distance; it was shaped by numerous constraints much like todays data movement in cloud environments. Merchants had to navigate complex toll systems imposed by regional rulers, much as cloud providers impose egress fees that make it costly to move data between platforms.
Migration to the cloud, data valorization, and development of e-commerce are areas where rubber sole manufacturer Vibram has transformed its business as it opens up to new markets. It’s a change fundamentally based on digital capabilities. Snowflake has also made datamanagement much easier for us,” Paleari adds.
The challenge some companies face, however, is the changemanagement of the structured approach for handling alterations within a development cycle. Changemanagement is an enabling framework for managing people through a change, in this case, related to a product in production. But it’s not easy.
At the start of the Australian Red Cross’ digital transformation journey, CIO Brett Wilson quickly realized they had a data issue. “We We have around 250 applications across the organization, and they all create massive amounts of data,” he says. When you don’t have a good understanding of your data, you can’t use it well,” he says.
Transformational CIOs continuously invest in their operating model by developing product management, design thinking, agile, DevOps, changemanagement, and data-driven practices. CIOs must also drive knowledge management, training, and changemanagement programs to help employees adapt to AI-enabled workflows.
This exercise yielded the right data, which was dispensed to different departments to take swift action to implement it. Using data, the brand is running several digital campaigns to gain more consumer insights and understand consumer demands.
These areas are considerable issues, but what about data, security, culture, and addressing areas where past shortcuts are fast becoming todays liabilities? Types of data debt include dark data, duplicate records, and data that hasnt been integrated with master data sources.
While data and analytics were not entirely new to the company, there was no enterprise-wide approach. As a result, we embarked on this journey to create a cohesive enterprise data strategy. Initially, I worked as a researcher in academia, specializing in data analysis. This initiative is about creating a unified data platform.
Despite the reduced costs, though, the necessity for comprehensive change programs remains paramount. Effective IT leadership now demands not only the courage to innovate but also a profound understanding of changemanagement principles. Gen AI isn’t a simple plug-and-play solution.
At issue is how third-party software is allowed access to data within SAP systems. The reason: Sharing data from the SAP system with third-party solutions is subject to excessive fees. What is the main purpose of changemanagement? In modern IT, changemanagement has many different guises. Project managers view changemanagement as the process used to obtain approval for changes to the scope, timeline, or budget of a project. What are the benefits of changemanagement?
Many of our customers had already started to move their applications and it made sense they would want to transition to datamanagement in the cloud as well. The investment thesis was we could dramatically change the value of the company by becoming a true cloud and subscription-driven company. Today, we’re a $1.6
Training, communication, and changemanagement are the real enablers. Managingchange and transformation Paolo Sicca, group CIO of manufacturing company Industria Grafica Eurostampa, is an example of how his role is evolving. The changemanagement was complex, as it always is, says Sicca.
Sameer Purao, who joined Celanese as CIO and CDO in 2021, is keeping the team and company focused by making changemanagement a core competency of his team, and ensuring a focus on value, agility, and purpose. All the equipment at the plants, including the P&IDs and drawings, are contextualized in this data lake.
Still, CIOs have reason to drive AI capabilities and employee adoption, as only 16% of companies are reinvention ready with fully modernized data foundations and end-to-end platform integration to support automation across most business processes, according to Accenture. These reinvention-ready organizations have 2.5
Nearly a third of IT leaders who hold chief data officer and similar roles at Fortune 1000 companies dont believe in the long-term future of the CDO position. The CDO role is about trying to get an organization from the way theyve operated in the past to basically having data in their DNA, Bean says.
Whenever an organization implements a new process, updates an existing process, deploys new technology, or fine-tunes services, its leaders must be mindful that even a simple change to a single process can start a domino effect, introducing issues in a range of other processes that must also be addressed. Do we have the data, talent, and governance in place to succeed beyond the sandbox? These, of course, tend to be in a sandbox environment with curated data and a crackerjack team. They need to have the data, talent, and governance in place to scale AI across the organization, he says. How confident are we in our data?
Whereas robotic process automation (RPA) aims to automate tasks and improve process orchestration, AI agents backed by the companys proprietary data may rewire workflows, scale operations, and improve contextually specific decision-making.
He defines the IT operating model as the organizations overall strategy, roles, decision rights, and management processes and controls, as well as the IT teams internal structure and external engagement with business units, customers, and suppliers. The reality is that the transition is a long-term endeavor.
To evaluate feasibility, ask: Do we have internal data and skills to support this? Prioritize data quality and security. Adhering to these practices also helps build trust in data. That said, watch for data bias. That said, watch for data bias. Increase adoption through changemanagement.
In our 2023 Data Literacy and Culture Survey, we uncovered key insights about the state of data culture in organizations. Don't miss out on gaining a competitive advantage by revitalizing your data culture.

The real challenge, however, is to “demonstrate and estimate” the value of projects not only in relation to TCO and the broad-spectrum benefits that can be obtained, but also in the face of obstacles such as lack of confidence in tech aspects of AI, and difficulties of having sufficient data volumes.
After all, changemanagement is a vital component of digital transformation success. Evangelizing for that change — from the very beginning — can make all the difference. data conversions, interface mapping, data item tagging and indexing, etc.) Why be an evangelist? 1 for CIOs to do the selling.
To capitalize on AI, organizations must fortify cloud environments with robust datamanagement, zero-trust policies, enterprise governance, FinOps and organizational changemanagement.
This includes access to talent, quality of data, integration with legacy systems, changemanagement, and ethical and regulatory concerns. This is further made complex by the widespread use of legacy systems, which are unable to cope with AIs demands. From an AI context, their challenges are similar to other sectors.
For years, IT and data leaders have been striving to help their companies become more data driven. But technology investment alone is not enough to make your organization data driven. A lot of organizations have tried to treat data as a project,” says Traci Gusher, EY Americas data and analytics leader. “It
For instance, AT&T launched a comprehensive reskilling initiative called “Future Ready” to train employees in emerging technologies such as cloud computing, cybersecurity, and data analytics. Changemanagement strategies, including clear communication and incentives, helped overcome resistance and drive adoption.
Today’s CIOs inherit highly customized ERPs and struggle to lead changemanagement efforts, especially with systems that [are the] backbone of all the enterprise’s operations,” wrote Isaac Sacolick, founder and president of StarCIO, a digital transformation consultancy, in a recent blog post.
It’s no secret that many of the challenges in getting value from data and insights are rooted in the need for better data literacy, internal communication, and a stronger data culture. It’s even become the subject of an SNL-worthy (for us data people) satire online.
Data governance definition Data governance is a system for defining who within an organization has authority and control over data assets and how those data assets may be used. It encompasses the people, processes, and technologies required to manage and protect data assets.
If a customer asks us to do a transaction or workflow, and Outlook or Word is open, the AI agent can access all the company data, he says. The data is kept in a private cloud for security, and the LLM is internally hosted as well. And the data is also used for sales and marketing. Thats been positive and powerful.
