Wow! It has been 6 months since I posted anything to this blog. Not setting a very good example I am afraid. It has been a busy winter and spring, and I have a lot of material stored up. Now if I just had the time to write! One thing I am working on for this fall that I am very excited about is a class at VCU that is near and dear to me: E-Government.

When someone says that the data integration process is automated, I suggest asking questions to clarify what they mean by automated. You'll probably conclude that the process is anything but automated let alone reliable, scalable, secure, or configurable. To some, automation implies efficient and reliable but still including manual steps so long as they are performed quickly and easily.

The entire U.S. travel system is under strain today causing a major disruption to business and pleasure travel on all carriers do to what United is calling a computer systems "glitch". What is a glitch? We have all seen those before. The most famous aviation computer glitch was Johnny in the movie Airplane. Was Johnny to blame this time? The fact is that these are very complex systems of systems and there are possibilities of cascading failures that can collapse the entire system.

On Tuesday, June 30, 2015, vandals cut three fiber-optic cables in an underground vault In Alameda, CA, near San Francisco, causing a blackout in phone and Internet services for several cities and thousands of businesses and homes that lasted for nearly 19 hours while repairs were made.
